DIVA UTOPIA

Wi-Fi

The Focal Diva Utopia is an active wireless loudspeaker at the very top of the market: a three-way floorstanding pair with the streamer, the digital conversion and the amplification built into the cabinets, so no separate electronics are needed at all.

The electronics come from Naim, which Focal owns. That is the point of the product: French cabinet and driver engineering with British amplification and streaming, in one object.

What Apple Home actually does with it

This is an AirPlay 2 speaker rather than a HomeKit accessory.

  • It appears in the Home app as a speaker you can play to, and as an AirPlay target in Control Centre.
  • You can assign it to a room and group it with HomePods for synchronised multi-room audio.
  • Siri can send music to it by room name.
  • It can be the audio output in a scene or an automation.

You cannot switch it on or set its volume from the Home app the way you would a light. Those stay with the speaker and its own app.

Before you buy

At around forty thousand dollars a pair this is not a considered purchase for most readers, and it is worth being plain about that.

What makes it interesting is the idea rather than the price. Almost nothing else at the high end puts the streamer, DAC, amplifiers and drivers into the speaker cabinets, and doing so removes every interconnect and every amplifier-to-speaker matching problem from the system.

Alongside AirPlay 2 it supports Bluetooth, Google Cast and UPnP.
