The LIFX Colour 1100lm (Nightvision Edition) is the standard 1100 lumen LIFX bulb with infrared LEDs added. The infrared light is invisible to the eye, so the room looks dark to you, but a security camera sees it and its night vision reaches much further.
That is a genuinely useful trick. Most indoor cameras rely on a small infrared ring around the lens, which lights the first few feet of a room well and the far corners badly. An infrared bulb in the ceiling fitting lights the whole room for the camera instead.
What works in Apple Home
- Turn the light on and off, and set brightness, colour and white temperature.
- Group it into rooms and zones alongside the rest of your lighting.
- Use it in scenes and automations, and control it with Siri.
The infrared output turns on automatically when the room is dark. You do not control it from the Home app.
Connectivity
LIFX bulbs join your Wi-Fi network directly. There is no bridge to buy, no hub to power and no spare Ethernet port to find, which is the main practical difference between LIFX and bridge-based systems such as Philips Hue.
Before you buy
This only pays for itself if a camera actually watches the room. If no camera does, buy the plain LIFX Colour 1100lm and save the difference.
For a downlight or a recessed fitting, the BR30 Nightvision Edition does the same job in a reflector shape.
