The LIFX String is the outdoor festoon light in the LIFX range: a run of individually controllable bulbs on a weatherproof cable, made for a garden, a terrace, a balcony or a pergola.
Because each bulb is addressable, the string can show one colour, a gradient along its length or a slow chase, rather than the single fixed warm white of an ordinary festoon set.
What works in Apple Home
- Turn the light on and off, and set brightness, colour and white temperature.
- Group it into rooms and zones alongside the rest of your lighting.
- Use it in scenes and automations, and control it with Siri.
Apple Home controls the string as one light. The per-bulb effects live in the LIFX app.
Connectivity
LIFX bulbs join your Wi-Fi network directly. There is no bridge to buy, no hub to power and no spare Ethernet port to find, which is the main practical difference between LIFX and bridge-based systems such as Philips Hue. That matters more outdoors than indoors, because a bridge-based system would need its hub to reach the far end of a garden. What this string needs instead is Wi-Fi coverage where you are hanging it, so check the signal at that spot before you buy.
Before you buy
The string is extendable, so measure the run and buy the extensions at the same time.
Outdoor runs need a weatherproof outdoor socket and, in most places, an RCD-protected circuit. If you do not have one where the string will hang, budget for an electrician as well as for the lights.
