Onelink Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm, Hardwired

The Onelink Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Hardwire) is a combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarm that wires into your mains supply and reports into Apple Home.

The hardwired version matters for a specific reason. Mains-wired alarms interconnect, so when one detects smoke they all sound, and in many countries building regulations require that on new work. A battery alarm cannot do it.

Why put an alarm in Apple Home

Two things change. The alarm tells you which room, by name, instead of leaving you to work out which unit is screaming. And it reaches your phone when you are out, which is the case an alarm on the ceiling cannot cover.

What works in Apple Home

• Report smoke detected and carbon monoxide detected as separate accessories.
• Send a notification when either triggers.
• Be used in automations, for example to turn every light in the house on.

Before you buy

This is mains work. Fitting a hardwired alarm means working on a lighting or a dedicated alarm circuit, so unless you are qualified and permitted to do that where you live, have an electrician install it.

Check your local regulations before you choose placement and quantity. Requirements for the number of alarms, the rooms they go in, and the interconnection between them differ by country and are not optional.

Treat the smart features as a supplement. The alarm’s job is to sound in the room; the notification is a bonus.
