The Onkyo TX-RZ30 is an AV receiver from Onkyo’s RZ range, the line aimed at enthusiasts rather than the entry market. It handles Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and it includes Dirac Live room correction, which is the feature worth paying attention to.
Dirac is generally regarded as a step above the calibration systems bundled with entry-level receivers. In a real room with furniture, curtains and hard floors, room correction changes the sound more than most component upgrades do.
What Apple Home actually does with it
This is an AirPlay 2 device, not a HomeKit accessory, and the difference matters.
- It appears in the Home app as a speaker you can play to, and in Control Centre as an AirPlay target.
- You can put it in a room and group it with HomePods for synchronised multi-room audio.
- Siri can send music to it by room name.
- You can use it as the audio output in a scene or an automation.
What you cannot do is turn it on, change the input or set the volume from the Home app as if it were a smart plug. Power, inputs and surround processing stay on the remote, the front panel and the manufacturer’s own app.
Before you buy
Run the calibration properly. Dirac wants several measurement positions around the seating area, with the microphone on a tripod, not held.
Count HDMI sockets and check what video standards they support against your television and consoles.
Onkyo, Integra and Pioneer receivers share engineering, so the Integra DTM-7.4 covers similar ground through custom-install channels.
