onn Large Wi‑Fi Speaker

The onn. Large Wi-Fi Speaker is Walmart’s own-brand wireless speaker, and its significance is the price: AirPlay 2 usually appears well above the budget end of the market, and this is squarely in it.

onn. is Walmart’s house electronics line, built to a price by contract manufacturers.

What Apple Home actually does with it

This is an AirPlay 2 speaker rather than a HomeKit accessory.

• It appears in the Home app as a speaker you can play to, and as an AirPlay target in Control Centre.
• You can assign it to a room and group it with HomePods for synchronised multi-room audio.
• Siri can send music to it by room name.
• It can be the audio output in a scene or an automation.

You cannot switch it on or set its volume from the Home app the way you would a light. Those stay with the speaker and its own app.

Before you buy

Judge it by what it costs. A budget Wi-Fi speaker that groups properly with HomePods and plays reliably is doing its job; it will not compete with the audio brands on sound.

For a secondary room, a garage or a workshop, where the alternative is nothing at all, that is a reasonable proposition.

Availability is tied to Walmart, so outside the United States this is hard to buy and harder to support.
