The Samsung Music Frame is a speaker disguised as a picture. It is a square frame that takes a printed photograph or artwork behind glass, with the drivers hidden behind it, designed to hang on a wall or stand on a shelf and not look like audio equipment.

It can work as a standalone wireless speaker or, paired with a Samsung soundbar and television, as a rear or additional channel in a surround system.

What Apple Home actually does with it

This is an AirPlay 2 device rather than a HomeKit accessory.

  • It appears in the Home app as a speaker you can play to, and as an AirPlay target in Control Centre.
  • You can put it in a room and group it with HomePods for synchronised multi-room audio.
  • Siri can send music to it by room name.
  • It can be the audio output in a scene or an automation.

Television sound does not go through Apple Home at all. That arrives over HDMI ARC or optical from the television, and the soundbar’s own remote and app control the modes and the volume.

Before you buy

Judge it as a design object first. If the point is that it disappears into the room, it succeeds; if you want the best sound for the money, a conventional speaker of the same price will beat it.

Wall mounting hides the cable run only if you plan for it. There is still a mains lead.

Using it as a surround channel requires a compatible Samsung soundbar and television, so check the models before buying it for that purpose.
