The Technics SC-CX700 is a wireless speaker system from Panasonic’s revived hi-fi brand, sold as a stereo pair rather than a single unit, with the electronics and streaming built in.
Technics includes three Space Tune functions, its room-correction system. Rather than assuming an ideal placement, the speakers adjust their output for where they actually stand: against a wall, in a corner, or out in the room.
What Apple Home actually does with it
This is an AirPlay 2 speaker rather than a HomeKit accessory.
- It appears in the Home app as a speaker you can play to, and as an AirPlay target in Control Centre.
- You can assign it to a room and group it with HomePods for synchronised multi-room audio.
- Siri can send music to it by room name.
- It can be the audio output in a scene or an automation.
You cannot switch it on or set its volume from the Home app the way you would a light. Those stay with the speaker and its own app.
Before you buy
Room correction on a wireless speaker is unusual and genuinely useful, because these speakers usually end up on a shelf or against a wall where a conventional pair would sound wrong.
Being a stereo pair rather than one box, the SC-CX700 produces proper stereo separation that single-cabinet systems cannot.
Technics also makes the SU-GX70 amplifier for use with passive speakers.
