Nothing on this page is a garage door opener. They are controllers: a small box that wires into the motor already bolted to your ceiling, presses its button for you, and — this is the part that matters — adds a sensor that tells Apple Home whether the door is genuinely shut.

That sensor is the whole reason to buy one. A remote control already opens the door. What you cannot do today is stand at a station platform and find out whether you left it open, or have the house tell you at eleven at night that it still is.

If you came looking for a window opener, this is the wrong page. The two get confused because they share a word, and searches for “HomeKit window opener” land here regularly. Openers for roof windows and skylights — the ones worth having because they shut themselves when it starts raining — are under windows and coverings, along with blinds, curtain motors and roller shutter controllers.

Two families, and the one you want depends on the motor:

  • Universal controllers wire to the manual push-button terminals almost every opener has. Meross, Remootio and iSmartgate work this way, and they work with most brands.
  • Manufacturer modules plug into the opener’s own bus and are made by the company that made the motor — Nice, SOMMER, Hörmann. If your motor is one of those, the matching module is the cleaner fit and usually keeps the manufacturer’s safety behaviour intact.

Look at the label on the motor before you look at anything else.

HomeKit garage door controllers we would buy

The default: Meross MSG100

The Meross Smart Wi-Fi Garage Door Opener MSG100 is the cheap, universal, well-supported answer. It joins your Wi-Fi directly with no hub or gateway, and it is the one most people should try first.

For two or three doors, the Meross MSG200 is the multi-door version of the same idea.

Gates as well as doors: Remootio 3

The Remootio 3 carries Bluetooth alongside Wi-Fi, so your phone can reach it directly at the gate rather than only through the house network — which matters at the end of a drive where Wi-Fi does not reach. Remootio is the one to look at for electric gates rather than up-and-over garage doors.

If your motor is a Nice: Nice IT4WIFI

Nice IT4WIFI is Nice’s own Wi-Fi module for Nice openers. Where a manufacturer makes its own HomeKit module, it is generally worth the premium over a universal box, because it talks to the control board rather than shorting a pair of terminals.

Other manufacturer modules

SOMMER SOMweb does the same job for SOMMER openers, Hörmann’s internal push button with WLAN for Hörmann, and iSmartgate is the other well-known universal option alongside Meross. None of the three is listed on Amazon UK, so buy them through a dealer.

What to check before you buy

The motor’s terminals. A universal controller needs the two contacts the wall button uses. Almost every opener has them; a few modern ones use an encrypted bus instead, and those need the manufacturer’s module. Photograph the control board before ordering.

Where the power is. These boxes live at the motor, on the ceiling, and want a socket up there. If there is not one, that is an electrician’s visit and it should be in the budget rather than a surprise on fitting day.

The door sensor and its cable. The open/closed sensor mounts on the door itself and runs a cable back to the controller. It is the fiddliest part of the installation and the part people skip — and a garage door in Apple Home without a state sensor is a button, not an accessory you can automate on.

Safety behaviour. A garage door is the only thing in your house that can close on a person. Keep the opener’s own photocell beam working, and treat anything that disables it as a reason to choose a different controller.

Asking Siri to open it. Apple treats a garage door as a security accessory in the same family as a lock, so Siri asks you to confirm before it opens one. That is correct behaviour rather than a fault with the controller, and it is not something the manufacturer can turn off for you.
